Every article deserves to be spiced up by an image or photo, but not all images are created equal.
Unless the image is your own creation or you have the explicit permission of the creator, images found on the web are property of the websites which they appear on. Because of this, it is important to find another outlet for images to add to your articles. This is where Creative Commons and Flickr become involved.
The Flickr website allows you to search the photos based on their license. In the case of Creative Commons, this includes some combination of Atrribution, Noncommercial, No Derivative Works, and Share-Alike. These define the rules in using these images for personal or commercial use. Depending on which you choose, you may only be required to give Attribution (i.e. credit) to the owner of the photo or image.
So add some color to your part of the vine, and make use of Creative Commons licensing!
An example is given at the end of this article, and was created using the following:

Thank you, this is exactly what I have been thinking of, but I was unable to think of a satisfactory solution. Now you've shown me one!
Good stuff. We need to add photo captions asap so this stuff can appear right underneath the photo if you type it in.
Bear in mind, when Newsvine starts paying people ad revenue from their columns, I imagine that will rule out the use of non commercial images.
Also, as a flickr user myself, it would be great if people let the photographer know when they use a photo. You don't have to let them know, but it's nice if you do
Thanks Mike, please do. Photo captions would be one of the most useful additions to the vine.
Yeah, I have been worrying about this too. I have heard that infringement can run up some pretty heavy bills.
Cool article, Andy. I just posted an article on pretty much the same topic where I list a bunch of other free & legal image resources besides Flickr. You might want to check it out.
Well, as my contribution to this "mutual admiration society," let me say, that you give a much better description of the Creative Commons license than I did. I think the articles complement each other, so I've added a line with a link here. Community, community, community! :)
Hello, Andy, could you please add the tag 'photo' or 'photos' to the article? thanks.
You're in Easy Mode. If you prefer, you can use XHTML Mode instead. |
